Finding the Perfect Location for your Photo Session
One of the first questions I ask my clients while we are in the planning process for portrait sessions is if they have any ideas for locations. A few of my clients know exactly where they want their photos taken, but most do not have a clue where they would like to go! There are so many unique ideas for photo locations: open landscapes, greenhouses, botanical gardens, parks, parking garages, coffee shops, playgrounds, bookstores, beaches, lakes, bridges, downtown areas, campgrounds, riversides, hiking trails, alleyways, painted murals, abandoned buildings, sports fields, museums, restaurants, favorite stores, docks, your own neighborhood, yard, or home, etc. I definitely have my favorite spots, but I also love exploring new locations!
Here are a few questions to help guide your thinking in choosing the perfect spot:
What type of look are you hoping for? Do you want an urban, sleek look? A rustic, farm setting? Flowers in a park? An open field? Forest scenery? The comfort of your own home or yard?
Is there a place that holds special meaning for you?
What time of day are you having your photographs made? If it’s in the middle of the day and you will be outdoors, you might need to choose a location with some open shade so that the lighting isn’t too harsh.
Do you want to find a location that has little to no additional fees, or are you willing to pay a little extra for a booking and/or entry fees?
Do you mind working in spaces with other people, or would you prefer a quiet, secluded location?
Is the location available/open?
*One place where I will not photograph people is on train tracks! It’s illegal (it’s trespassing), carries a heavy fine, and is incredibly dangerous.
