Capturing Life's Most Precious Moments: Preparing for your In-Home Newborn Session

As an experienced photographer and mom of two little boys, I understand the importance of capturing those precious early moments of your baby's life. Babies change so much in the first year, and those first several weeks are often a blur…so document those sweet newborn moments, from the scrunchy stretches, yawns, little fingers and toes, and even the little pouty faces! While some families prefer more posed portraits that can be captured in a studio, others prefer in-home newborn sessions, also called lifestyle newborn photography sessions. These are best for providing a more relaxed and intimate setting, allowing photographers to capture genuine moments that reflect the love and joy of your growing family in your own, comfortable space. To ensure that your session is a success, here are some tips to help you prepare:

  1. Choose the Right Time: Newborn photography is best done within the first week or two, when newborns are still sleeping most of the time and can usually be easily soothed. In addition, newborns are often sleepiest and most cooperative in the morning or early afternoon, but you will know your baby best! Plan your session when your baby is typically calm and content.

  2. Set the Scene: Clear out any clutter and choose a few areas in your home with good natural light where we can capture beautiful photos. A living room with large windows, a large bed in a bedroom, or a cozy nursery works well.

  3. Keep it Cozy: Crank up the heat a bit to keep the room warm and comfortable for your baby, who you may want to be undressed for some of the photos. A warm environment helps keep newborns calm and sleepy. A white-noise machine is also helpful!

  4. Dress Comfortably: For newborn sessions, simple is best. Opt for neutral-colored clothing that won't distract from the main focus—your baby! Soft, solid colors or subtle patterns work well.

  5. Feed and Comfort: Just before the session, feed your baby so he/she is content and sleepy. A full tummy often leads to a more relaxed and happy baby. Have a few extra diapers and wipes on hand for quick changes, if needed.

  6. Personalize Your Session: Incorporate meaningful items into the photos, such as a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or family heirloom. Are there any items special to mom or dad, like a guitar, baseball hat/ball, or piece of jewelry? These personal touches add depth and personality to your images.

  7. Relax and Enjoy: Remember, the goal of a lifestyle newborn session is to capture authentic moments with your family. Try to relax and enjoy the experience, knowing that your photographer will guide you through poses and interactions to create beautiful memories.

  8. Sibling and Pet Inclusion: If you have older children or pets, consider including them in some of the photos. Capture the love and excitement of the whole family as you welcome the newest member.

  9. Trust Your Photographer: Your photographer is there to guide you through the process and capture the essence of your family's love and connection. Trust in their expertise and enjoy the journey!

  10. Be Flexible: Babies can be unpredictable, and that's okay! If your little one needs a break for feeding or cuddling, we can take a pause and resume when they're ready. That’s why newborn sessions are often longer than regular family sessions…you never quite know what baby will be ready for!

*Special note to Moms: Don’t fall into the trap of worrying about how you look post-partum. It’s so important to be in photos with your children and document those special newborn moments; you are an essential part of them! Find an outfit that you are comfortable in, let a family member or friend come do your hair and make-up, and RELAX. You are beautiful. What you’re doing is a miracle.

By following these tips and thoughtfully preparing for your in-home newborn session, you'll help create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Together, your photographer will help you capture beautiful memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime!
